This recipe will make about 2 dozen baby rusks, depending on how you cut them up. You can substitute the pureed apple for pureed anything your baby eats (fruit and vegetables). Pumpkin and Parsnip are favourites here.

  • 1 cup of Rice Flour
  • 1 Cup of pureed cooked apple (Steam it until it’s tender, then mash with a wand mixer)
  • Enough water to make a stiff dough.

The Recipe

  1. Combine the flour and pureed apple and add enough water to mix up a stiff dough.
  2. Roll it out on a floured board into long thing sausages
  3. Slice into rusks and line on a floured tray
  4. Bake in a low oven (150 C) until they are hard.
  5. Store in an airtight container

Ideas for apple substitutes could be pureed pear, banana, pumpkin, carrot, parsnip, brocoli, blueberries or a combination of your baby’s favourite fruit and veg. Brocolli and Apple have been a hit in this house.

Are these similar to the Baby MumMum Rice Rusks? I loved buying that brand for my 13-month-old son, but I stopped when I realized they were made in China. Are these messy when the kids eat them?

Can anyone tell me *approximately* how long these bake for? I’m horrible in the kitchen and kept checking on the first batch…. I think I opened the oven door so many times, they couldn’t harden properly.

      Hi Lauren,
Mine are usually done in about 25 minutes. They also harden as they cool.

About how long are they good for if stored in an airtight container?
