5 Tips For Keeping Your House Tidy(ish) With Kids

If you have kids you will know that the washing always seems to be there, dirt and sand create dust storms in your house and you are always commando crawling and jumping through an obstacle course. Well maybe that was a bit over dramatic, for most days.

There are no silver bullets for ensuring your house is always clean, but there are many small little tips that make life easier. If you manage to implement many little tips you might even be able to maintain a clean house for more than 5 minutes from when you last cleaned.

1. Make A Robot Vacuum

This never ending task can be handled by a robot. Yes, there are robots you can buy now for just a few hundred dollars that do vacuuming for you, automatically. You can even schedule it for when you are out of the house. They won’t do it to the same quality as your normal vacuum (although they have come a very long way in the last few years), but they can ensure your floors are good for longer and you could probably only vacuum once a week.

I researched the company that makes them. They make all kinds of robots even for the military, so hopefully it might stand up to your house :) They avoid stairs, do hard floors and carpets and can even effectively clean the edges of the room.

I just did some more research and found out they have a floor mopper/cleaner as well, called the roomba scooba. I haven’t used one of these before but the reviews look quite good.

2. Eating Outside

While there is warm weather eating outside saves a lot of floor clean up later. Save it for the ants and eat outside. Plus if it gets really bad you could at least just hose down the area, something I wish I could do in my house sometimes.

3. Toy Boxes

Or should I say enormous chests. Its the best investment I have ever made to get large chest where toys can be stored. Also if your child has more toys than they know what to do with put half of them away in the shed or a cupboard and in a few months switch the toys over (toy rotation). Children will want to play wth every toy in the room, so if they only have half, they can’t create as much mess.

4. Decluttering

One thing that makes any house look dirty is clutter. If you invest in shelves or cupboards and a big clean out of things you no longer use, your house will be so much easier to clean. This clutter builds up again over time (nature abhores a vacuum). Its a job that needs doing every now and again, but it certainly helps during your regular cleaning.

5. Stay Away From Dirt

The main way dirt or sand gets into your house is through kids running in and out the back. So you need the largest path from the garden to your door. You can either extend paving, buy a door mat, put lawn closest to the door, anything to make sure that by the time your kids have been in the garden and are at the back door, a lot of the dirt has come off their shoes or feet.

Every little bit helps, so even if you only implement a few ideas it will make your house cleaning easier.

We have a set of bookshelves in the family room devoted just to DS’ toys, which will be great once he’s old enough to remember to put things back when he’s done. ;)

RE dirt: Having a door mat outside and inside every entrance door (including the garage) does wonders for keeping all the outside dirt from being tracked on. Training all household members to take off their shoes immediately upon entering is even more effective.

Shoes off is a great idea. Now I need to get my son to wear shoes when he is out the back :)
