Sew A Prefold Diaper Or Nappy In 9 Steps

I’ve just sewn a bunch of prefold diapers for our impending arrival – and they’re dead simple. I needed something for the first few weeks, so I could guage how many wees the little fellow would be doing, and something nice and quick dry for frequent changes. So Prefolds it was!

Pattern

You don’t really need a pattern, prefolds are a rectangle. However, for accuracy’s sake, my pattern, is a rectangle, 35cm x 50cm , with a 10cm x 50cm soaker panel. (It’s basically the width of the flanellette folded in half, allowing 10cm for the soaker panel)

Materials

  1. 4 Metres of nappy flannelette (you can use things like musin guaze, bamboo jersey, hemp jersey, or anything absorbant) 4 metres makes approx 8 nappies.
  2. Pins
  3. Scissors
  4. Cotton
  5. Sewing Machine
  6. Patience!!

Method

  1. Fold your fabric in half longways
  2. With the folded edge at the top, pin your pattern to the fabric. (Make sure it’s all smooth and neat)
  3. Cut it out.
  4. Pin the soaker pieces to the middle of 1 side of your wrong side of fabric.
  5. Straight stitch the soaker pieces on.
  6. Turn your fabric so it’s got the wrong sides facing out, and straight stitch round the edges, leaving a gap to turn through.
  7. Turn through, and top stitch the gap closed
  8. Zig Zag down each side of your soaker third.
  9. Voila, it’s done. Move on to the next one!
