Types Of Cloth Diapers

Types of Cloth Diapers

This article is about the types of cloth diapers available. And the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Flat Terry Diapers -

Terry Flats, or Flanellette flats are the traditional diapers that many of us were raised on. They are simply an absorbant square of terry towelling, or diaper flanellette.

The diaper is used by folding, and pinning it, or using a Snappi to secure it.

Terry diapers require a cover to make them waterproof. They are by far the cheapest way to diaper, but require a little effort folding them.

Prefold Diapers

Prefold diapers are similar to Terry Flats, except they are divided into thirds, with the middle third containing an extra layer or two of fabric, making them absorbant.

Prefold diapers usually are made of guaze, flanellete, or sometimes a super absorbant fabric like bamboo or hemp jersey.

Prefolds are used by folding them, and pinning or using a snappi – they also require a cover to be waterproof.

As far as diapers go, prefolds are brilliant for newborn babies, as they are soft, and absorbant, and fit nicely into a cover. They’re the second cheapest way to diaper your child.

Fitted Diapers

Fitted diapers, are shaped like a disposable diaper, and secured with pins, snappis, snaps or velcro. They can be made from a range of fabrics, and are a convenient alternative to foldng Prefolds or Flats.

Fitted diapers require a cover to be waterproofed.

All In One Diapers

All In One Diapers are shaped like a fitted, but contain a waterproof layer, so they don’t need a cover. They are the most expensive option from the cloth diaper range, but require virtually no effort to use. Making them a great option for time challenged moms who want to use cloth diapers.
